My Mother Lands

DSC_0003

Last week I delivered 8 large paintings at University of Michigan Main Hospital Lobby. Show runs from Oct. 19 through Dec. 7 2009. The two above paintings are new and included in the show: top, “My Mother Lands”, bottom, “My Daughter Departs”. They touch on the experience of my daughter leaving for college, and reading through my mothers’ recently written memoirs.

I really enjoyed hanging work in the hospital lobby, people milling, watching, reacting, advising. So nice to have a built in audience . . . am thinking of further options for displaying my work in public spaces. Any input welcome!

In Mourning, Margaret Hassan_300

The day after Memorial Day, I am looking at this painting I have hanging in the studio. It is a painting I did in memory of Margaret Hassan, a CARE worker who was kidnapped and assasinated in Iraq in 2004. The weight of the war, the sadness of her death had, and still has a presence in the studio. I have worked on it off and on, and this is what a blog is for, yes? to share a piece I still hold onto and contemplate. Below, a detail.

And . . here is my new friend, a young female cardinal who keeps visiting me in the studio, tapping at the window.

House Offering

This is an installation plus detailed views of my piece in the show, Home: Loving It, Losing It, Leaving It currently on display. Below is a description that accompanied the piece.

Finding Home Within: When I imagine what it would be like to lose the home we live in, I experience a fear that looms as a dark hole inside. This self-portrait is about a search for The Home that no one, no economic downturn, no unpredictable, unforeseen, catastrophe, can take away.

The Offering: As an artist, I would like offer these 70 wax houses for anyone, who in anyway, senses a loss of home, be it a physical or a metaphoric home.

May it be an offering that reminds us that the gifts of color, nature, rhythms, birds, floating spheres, juxtapositions, and transparency, are around us as well as within, in unimpeded abundance.
